In 1510 the first slaves sent by Portuguese traders arrived in the Spanish Americas. Over the next 350 years over 12 million Africans were forced into slavery and sent thousands of miles away to live and labour in a foreign country with no hope of ever seeing their homeland again.

No-one volunteers to become a slave so how did this happen?

Your task in this case study is to investigate the methods by which people were enslaved. Use the sources, extra information, the timeline and your own knowledge to help you in your research. A worksheet has been provided to help you record your answers and draw conclusions.
