If you are a fresher starting at Durham this year then hopefully we will see you at our first observing evening of Michaelmas term: Freshers' Obs on Sat 11th Oct, 7:30pm. Please feel free to come along, whether you’re a frequent star-gazer or you've never tried astronomy before; our Obs Officers will be on hand to show you around the night sky through a selection of the society's telescopes. Normally we meet every Saturday at 8pm outside the Physics Department, and anyone is welcome to come along throughout the year.

If you happen to be more of an armchair astronomer, look out for the society’s series of fortnightly talks, featuring guest speakers from the physics department. As well as this we are hosting the annual Thomas Wright Trophy Quiz this year, where we battle local astronomy societies with our universal knowledge. If that wasn’t enough, we are also arranging two external speakers for the year ahead.

To those of you who are returning to Durham, I hope you had a great summer and I look forward to seeing you all again.

Happy Observing,

Nicolle

President 2014/15

Hello and welcome to the AstroSoc website!

Here you can find details of what the society gets up to, including upcoming events, our telescopes, observing logs by society members, an image gallery, details of the current exec, and more!

If you are a fresher starting at Durham this year and are thinking about joining the society, our first observing evening of Michaelmas term will be Freshers' Obs on Sat 12th Oct, 7:30pm. Please feel free to come along and give us a go, especially if you've never tried astronomy before! Our Obs Officers will be on hand to show you the wonders of the night sky through a selection of the society's telescopes. On normal weeks, we meet every Saturday at 8pm outside the Physics Department, and anyone is welcome to come along throughout the year.

If you happen to be more of an armchair astronomer, look out for the society’s series of fortnightly talks, featuring guest speakers from the physics department and further afield.

To those of you who are (like me) old-timers in the society, I look forward to seeing you again next term!

Clear Skies,

Mike

President 2013/14

Hello everyone and welcome to AstroSoc! My name is Cat and I’m the President for this year. Hopefully we’ll see you at Fresher obs (13th Oct, 7:30pm) but if not, feel free to come along to any session throughout the year and see what you think of us!  During Michaelmas we meet outside Physics at 8pm every Saturday. Hopefully they’ll be plenty of clear nights so we can use the society’s telescopes and binoculars to observe the skies above Durham. We also have fortnightly talks on Thursdays in the Physics dep. (look out for the posters) which you are welcome to come along to. Here at AstroSoc there always seems to be a bountiful supply of biscuits too! Please don’t worry if you haven’t got much experience with Astronomy, anyone is welcome. I hope you have a wonderful time here in Durham and that AstroSoc get to share some of that with you.

All the best,
Cat

Hi all, it's great to be back in Durham for what looks to be a promising year for AstroSoc! We drew considerable interest at the Freshers' Fair, and to those have joined or are about to join us, I say welcome. My name is James, I am the president and our job is to make sure that you never gaze upon a clear night sky in the same way again! We kick off this year with the Freshers' Obs this Saturday, for which you should already have received an email. There you can see what we're all about, as well as introduce yourselves to each other and to us. We have plenty of events in store for the rest of the year, but for now, let us hope for clear skies this weekend!

Best Wishes

James
