Hi, I’m Issy Davies and I’m Durham University Ski & Snowboard Club (DUSSC) race captain. It doesn’t matter how good or bad you are, the club is open to everyone of any standard. As our President likes to point out, whether you’re a beginner or a ‘front flipping, cliff hucking Norwegian instructor’ the club is open for you to join and just have a good time.
I would have had a very different university experience if I had never joined DUSSC: I’ve had the opportunity to run Britain’s biggest ski trip Palatinalps, competed at a top level, travelled around Europe, and made some incredible friends. Its one of the greatest ways I’ve been able to have a break from college life and meet people from all over the place who love to ski and love to have a good time.
The ski team is an unique university sport club because not only do we compete in the UK and abroad on a regular basis, but have the largest social membership of any Durham club. Every year over 60 DUSSClings travel to Edinburgh for a weekend of extreme sports and parties and the club is so friendly that our alumni friends regularly make the long trip back to attend our events or just to have a meal and catch up.
Being elected as race captain was a huge privilege not just because of our much envied handover trip to an undisclosed location in Europe (Warsaw last year, Barcelona the year before that) but because I enjoy training so much every week, and love seeing racing beginners grow into ‘mean slalom shredding machines’ as our freestyle captain often remarks.
Key events on our calendar are the dryslope championships in Edinburgh, the indoor dome series in Leeds, Kings Ski competition all over the north, the alpine championships in the alps and of course our many and varied social events, from the renowned mario cart scooter social to the very serious pac man bar crawl.
