Making the most of your Easter break.

After unarguably one of the hardest terms, the Easter holidays are welcomed with open arms. After all those summatives, you certainly deserve (and need!) this month off, so make the most of it! Here are some hints and tips of things you can do before leaving Durham for Easter, as well as how to make the most of your break and prepare for exams.

So, what should you do before you leave Durham?
How’s about by giving your room or house a spring clean before you leave to give yourself the best start to the last term of the year. Returning to clean environment will make not only make unpacking easier when you arrive, but will also give you time to relax with friends you may not have seen over the Easter break. Also, for those of you who are livers-out, it is worth noting that some landlords look around the property over the holidays. So if you want to keep hold of those deposits, it’s worth making sure they have nothing to potentially fine you on.

Once you’ve left Durham and you’re home. What next?
RELAX. Spend some quality time with your family and friends you haven’t seen all term. Perhaps when you’re filling them in on what you’ve been up to for the past 10 weeks, skip out the lows of those late night summative sessions and focus on the positives from your term. Not only is this more interesting to listen to, but positive thinking has a number of health benefits including:

  • Better psychological and physical well-being
  • Better cardiovascular health and reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease
  • Better coping skills during hardships and times of stress

Pretty good reasons to be talk about the good things, right?

Unfortunately, we all know there’s still work to do; summatives to write and exams to prepare for. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by how much you have to do. Instead, start by writing a list of things you want to achieve by the end of the Easter break. Be sure to break them down into smaller, more manageable tasks. For example, instead of “write essay”, split it up into sections of “research for essay”, “plan essay”, “complete a first draft of essay”. Ticking off each individual section will make you feel more productive, and before you know it, the essay with be written.

Once you’ve written out EVERYTHING you need to do, perhaps set yourself some deadlines for when you want to achieve specific tasks by. A goal to work towards is easier to motivate yourself for. Then, once you’ve assigned your goals, give yourself daily checklists of things you want to do in order to achieve those goals. If you work best doing one thing at a time, do that! If on the other hand you get bored easily, mix up your daily tasks with a bit of everything!

Make sure you treat yourself for goals you have achieved, but don’t beat yourself up on goals you’ve missed! Maybe the goal was a bit too ambitious, or more complications cropped up than you thought. Just learn from it, and keep going.

Before you know it, the month will have flown by and you’ll be travelling back to Durham hopefully feeling confidence about the term ahead. HAPPY EASTER!
