There’s something about Mary’s

St mary's College Induction Welcome

It’s been a busy start to term for the Fresher Reps at St Mary’s College who have started to get the college ready for the arrival of 250 new students on October 1st. With more events than ever before planned to take place across college, Durham and beyond, this Induction Week will definitely be one to remember.

Perfect planning and preparation

St Mary's Welcome InductionSt Mary’s Induction Welcome Planning started during the summer and the thirty-strong team have been busy finessing their artistic skills while making banners and decorations for the in-college events, brushing up their dance moves for club nights in Durham and Newcastle and have even found time to do a little housekeeping work while prepping every room with gowns, T-shirts and information booklets for new students arriving at St Mary’s.

Focus on welfare

This year we have placed an even greater focus on Student Welfare with new student run consent and active-bystanding workshops taking place during Induction Week to accompany the plethora of other welfare activities that the wonderful staff of the college already put on.

Talking of the staff, Principal, Simon Hacker, Vice-Principal, Catherine Paine and …. Dave along with so many other members of staff, have been working tirelessly all summer long, preparing the college for the new intake of students. All of us here at Mary’s can’t wait to welcome the new crop of students to the college and show them all of the work we have done to make sure that they have the best Induction Week possible.

St Mary's Welcome InductionSomething for everyone

Sports and Societies are being catered for too with a whole range of fairs and taster sessions taking place across the week so that we carry on the fantastic tradition of student participation, that we pride ourselves on, here at Mary’s. With live lounges, art taster sessions and sport tasters going on, whatever your interests, we have the right club or society here for you at Mary’s.

My name is Sam Martin and I am a third year at St Mary’s and I will be your Head Freshers’ Rep this year! I cannot explain how much this college means to both myself and the wonderful team that I have the privilege of managing this year. I’ve been involved in various aspects of college throughout my time here, from being Sports Officer for a year to acting in plays and taking part in university societies such as Purple Radio and being a University Sports Commentator. My tip for anyone at Mary’s would be to get involved in as much as possible when you are here, it really is the time of your life!
