Faith, Technology and Tomorrow

Picture2This Poole-based project has provided opportunities to draw upon the experience of healthcare professionals in order to explore contemporary medicine in the context of Christian faith. A behind the scenes tour of Poole Hospital has been a particular highlight and involved over fifty people visiting the pharmacy, neurophysiology, medical physics and radiotherapy departments and to learn about some of the technology involved, not least the LINAC (Linear Accelerator). A ‘Medial Panel’ evening provided further opportunities to engage with the area through quizzing General Practitioners, an IT professional, a Clinical Scientist, an ‘A and E’ nurse, and a hospital chaplain on their work and faith.

Another highlight of the work to date has involved a ‘film clip’ evening exploring dreams and nightmares regarding the future in relation to science, medicine and technology as envisaged in the movies. Future events include an exploration of ‘Human Enhancement’ and the vision of using medicine and technology not simply to heal the sick but to ‘enhance’ humanity. This project is led by Josh Naylor and Justin Tomkins, both of St Mary’s Church, Longfleet, and further details, as well as links to social media, are available through the project website (https://www.sciencefaithandyou.co.uk/ ).
