Welcome to all our new and returning volunteers! We have loads of exciting volunteering opportunities this term, so see below to get involved.
 
If you would like to sign up to a particular project or want to find out about how to get involved, all of the project email addresses can be found on our website, www.scadurham.org.uk.

1. Inductions
If you missed our initial induction sessions – not to worry! We will be holding more induction sessions each week so that everyone has a chance to get involved. The inductions for the next 2 weeks are as follows:
 
  • Monday 29th Oct – 2-3pm – PCL050
  • Thursday 1st Nov – 2-3pm – PCL054
  • Tuesday 6th Nov – 1-2pm – CM219
  • Friday 9th Nov – 1-2pm – CLC407

2. Training
SCA are offering numerous training opportunities this term, including first aid, working with children, and dog-walking training. To book a place on a training session you must sign up via the relevant links on the ‘Events’ page on the SCA website, or email training.sca@durham.ac.uk. (Please note the Intergenerational and Dementia Training has been postponed, new date to be confirmed).
                                                                                                                                                                                   
 
3. DBS Checks
If you are volunteering on a project that works with children, you will need a DBS check. You can apply for a DBS if you bring the correct documentation to an induction! If you are unsure if you need a DBS check or whether you already have a valid certificate, please contact your project leader or contact us in the office (contact details at the bottom of this email).
                                                                                                                                                                                   
 
4. One-off/Other Volunteering Opportunities
  • Organic Permaculture Veggie Box Scheme Needs You! (Abundant Earth Durham)
    Come and help finish off the season with planting, mulching, light weeding, drinking tea and eating biscuits! Find out about permaculture and our veggie box scheme and meet local folk with sustainable ethics at Abundant Earth (Cooke’s Wood, Broompark, Durham DH7 7RL). Tuesday 6th November 10-4pm come for any length of time, but text Beth 07719530472 to state when you are going.


  • Fruitful Durham
    Help to clear space for a community venue on Wednesday 14th November, 1-4pm. Fruitful Durham make apple juice from apples from the orchard so there may be some opportunities for pressing too and a bonfire afterwards! Easy bus ride from Durham – Colliery Road, Bearpark, DH7 7AU. Email community.action@durham.ac.uk to get involved!
  • FareShare Food Bank Collections – Tesco Gilesgate
    Volunteers are still needed for short shifts at Tesco in Gilesgate to collect food for those who are in need. Sign up at fareshare.org.uk.

  • Christmas Fair Neville’s Cross, Volunteers Needed!
    There are a number of great volunteering roles available in the organisation and delivery of this year’s Christmas Festival at Neville’s Cross. Email mandeep.smith@hotmail.co.uk to get involved!

5. Volunteering Spotlight – Wharton Park Success!
Three volunteers from the Durham University Charity Fashion Show committee lent a hand at Wharton Park this week, and had a fantastic time! If you would be interested in similar opportunities, see the one-offs listed above and email student.volunteering@durham.ac.uk if you are interested in helping out at Wharton Park.

“Having the opportunity to help the Friends of Wharton Park in the beautiful community garden was incredible. It was great to see how much care goes into Durham’s environmental projects and to feel part of the local community outside of university life. All of the DUCFS team are so grateful to have been welcomed into the garden, and we will definitely come back soon for some more green fingered fun!”
