1. Youth Club Volunteering Opportunities

• Durham City Youth Project
This youth club are looking for 2 people who would like to volunteer for a junior youth club for 7-12 year olds on Wednesdays 5.30-7pm. You will need to get the X12 bus to Framwellgate Moor – you can get it from the science site or from the bus station. If you keep the bus tickets, we can reimburse you! You will need to have attended an induction session and applied for a DBS check before then (see point 2, above). Email student.volunteering@durham.ac.uk to get involved!

• AYCC Youth Club
AYCC are looking for lots of volunteers for various sessions that take place on all weekday evenings at various times between 3-9pm. There is a wide range of activities going on, such as sports and crafts. These sessions will start on the week beginning 21st January. We are asking potential volunteers to go and have a look round the youth club and have a chat about what they would like to get involved in on 12th December 2-4.30pm. This will be a drop in session, so you don’t have to be there for all of it. You will also need to have attended an induction session and filled in a DBS form before you start to volunteer, so it is the perfect time to sort this before the holidays. Email student.volunteering@durham.ac.uk to get involved!

2. Volunteer Feedback Survey – Tell us About Your Experience!

As the first term of volunteering is drawing to a close, we would love to hear your feedback! Please click the link below and answer a couple of questions on your experience of volunteering with SCA this term, what you enjoyed, what kind of volunteering opportunities you would like to see next term etc.! There is the option to submit it anonymously. Many thanks!

3. Inductions & DBS

You must attend an induction session before you start volunteering. We hold induction sessions each week so that everyone has a chance to get involved with volunteering throughout the year. We will be holding more inductions after Christmas, so keep your eye out on the weekly email in January for more dates!

If you are volunteering on a project that works with children, you will need a DBS check. The attached list shows what you need to bring, and you also need to know your national insurance number (but we don’t need proof of this number). You can bring along your documents to complete a DBS form in our office anytime, or at an induction if you are already intending to attend one of those.
If you are unsure if you need a DBS check or whether you already have a valid certificate, please contact your project leader or contact us in the office.

4. Christmas Clothing & Gift Collections

• Cash for Kids – Gift Collection
Donate a gift and help to make Christmas morning special for a disadvantaged child in the North East.
Cash for Kids’ ‘Mission Christmas’ appeal aims to raise money and donations for children in the North East who are at risk of not receiving a gift on Christmas Day. The appeal aims to collect gifts for over 48,000 children living in poverty in our region. Please donate new, unwrapped gifts of any value which would be suitable for children and young people aged 0-18 years. Donations will be collected at the Careers & Enterprise office based in the Palatine Centre.
Full information about the appeal can be found online at https://planetradio.co.uk/metro/charity/events/metro-mission-christmas/

• North East Homeless – Clothing and Gift Collection
Some of our students are organising a collection of Christmas gift items for homeless people in the North East, for the charity North East Homeless. Please bring the following items to the SCA office (PC012 in the Palatine Centre):

5. Other Events

• Durham Market Stall Opportunity
Durham Markets are offering the opportunity for one stall at the monthly Saturday (outdoor) markets to a student cause/charity, to raise awareness or fundraise. If you would like to raise awareness/money etc. for your project, contact Colin at colin@durhammarkets.co.uk.

• SCA Christmas Charity Dog Show
If you’re still in Durham on Sunday 16th December, come down to Maiden Castle Sports Centre from 10-4pm to watch our fantastic dog show! It is free for spectators and there will be a range of traders, a raffle and of course a load of cute puppers in festive attire! All proceeds will go to Wag and Co., a charity which provides visits from friendship dogs to isolated people in the North East. See attached flyer and programme – don’t miss it!

• Santa vs Elves Football Friendly with Team Durham Project Participants
The Santas vs Elves football match is an opportunity for students to engage with one of our weekly adult outreach session’s participants. We are looking for student volunteers to come along to make up one of the sides, that will play against our complex needs adults. There is a trophy to be won (and honour/pride!) but mainly it’s to have fun and encourage engagement during the festive period. Several of the participants are from ‘Changing Lives’, so if you want to bring along a donation for residents of the local hostel, that would be very much appreciated. The match will be held at Maiden Castle Sports Grounds on Thursday 13th December, 11am-12noon. If you would like to take part, please email lynn.preston@durham.ac.uk.

As always, please don’t hesitate to get in touch by email, phone or call into the office if you have any questions.

Happy Volunteering!
