Our Northern Context

The North of England is a diverse, vast and special part of the UK. Cranmer Hall is England’s Northernmost Theological College and we are proud to be ‘in the North, of the North, and for the whole Kingdom’.

Combine this with some of the country’s best transport links and a location at the heart of indigenous British Christianity and scholarship and it is difficult to imagine a better place to train for ministry!

Wherever you come from, training at Cranmer will equip you for ministry in the whole church and offer a distinctive perspective on life and ministry which will enrich you and those you are called to serve. Without succumbing too quickly to stereotypes we are called to be warm and welcoming, to engage frankly but graciously with each other, to find the Lord where we are and in what we have been given, and to enjoy beer which far surpasses that brewed elsewhere in the country!

Our northern location brings many blessings, not least placement opportunities and an abundance of partnerships which are described elsewhere in this site.

Cranmer Hall

Cranmer Hall is England’s Northernmost Theological College and we are proud to be ‘in the North, of the North, and for the whole Kingdom’.

Combine this with some of the country’s best transport links and a location at the heart of indigenous British Christianity and scholarship and it is difficult to imagine a better place to train for ministry! Less than three hours from London by train, North East England is a place of contrast.

To the east are sweeping beaches and to the west you’ll find heathery hills and moody mountains with the famous World Heritage Site, Hadrian’s Wall running right through the middle. Sparkling cities like Newcastle and Gateshead complement Durham and thrive with shopping, the arts and nightlife.

North East England can lay claim to being The Cradle of English Christianity – St Aidan came to Holy Island in AD635 and English history was first written by Bede, at Jarrow.

Then there is Durham with, as Bill Bryson says, ‘the best Cathedral on planet earth.’ It has been home to pioneers across the centuries. The world’s first public railway steamed into life here and the award-winning Gateshead Millennium Bridge is one of the world’s most celebrated pieces of architecture.

Wherever you come from, training at Cranmer will equip you for ministry in the whole church and offer a distinctive perspective on life and ministry that will enrich you and those you serve.

Without succumbing too quickly to stereotypes we are called to be warm and welcoming, to engage frankly but graciously with each other, to find Jesus where we are and in what we have been given, and to enjoy beer which far surpasses that brewed elsewhere in the country!
