Social life

At Cranmer Hall we believe that when Jesus said He had come that we might ‘have life and have it to the full’ He, at least to some extent, meant that Christians should ‘get a life’. Joy matters, and it is an important part of who we are in Durham.

Bar

The college has a well stocked cellar bar which is made good use of by students. Cranmer even has its own range of specially brewed beers, The Ordinand, The Non-Conformist and The DDO!

Family Life and SPICE

SPICE is our group for those married to ordinands and it is a great group to which to belong. Here you will find friendship, support, fun, fellowship, and all manner of things we daren’t predict.

Singles in Ministry is our group for single ordinands. We recognise that there are lots of different ways of being single (never married – either by choice or circumstance, divorced, widowed, single with children, single without children). Given this we are keen not to make assumptions about single people, but to listen and grow in shared understanding together. Being single in ministry brings its own particular opportunities, joys  and demands. We want all our single students to flourish in training and in ministry. To help support that aim we run a group for single people training for ordained ministry.

We meet each term for opportunity to relax together and create safe space in which to explore key issues related to ministry and the single life. The group is purely optional, and has proved to be an excellent environment for friendship to flourish and for mutual understanding to develop. This group has an annual away day which usually combines space to walk/ read/ relax/ talk and eat together. Since its inception two years ago, this group has been marked by honesty and laughter.

Sport and Fitness

Sport is very much part of our life in college.

There are many opportunities to enjoy sport and keep fit at Cranmer Hall.

St John’s College Gym

The well-equipped Gym is currently in the Cruddas building. It has a range of gym equipment, from rowing machines, stationary bicycles and various weights. John’s is currently building a new purpose built gym as part of its development plan.

Book/Reserve a Gym Room Session

Due to the demand for the facilities, it is recommended that a session is reserved. This is not compulsory but will guarantee you full access to the gym for an hour.

Please call 0191 334 5000 or contact Reception to reserve a session.

*Please note, there is a maximum of 2 hours per member, per day.

Conditions of use
St John’s College Fitness Room and Gym Room are facilities available to those members who have obtained a compulsory induction for both rooms from the college representative. These facilities can only be used when at least 2 members are present at all times during the session (The gym has a maximum of 2 members per session).

Boat Club

St John’s College has a fine history of rowing; the Boat Club was founded in 1910 and is one of the oldest in the university, and the college usually places very highly in intra university competitions. The Boat Club operates out of a conveniently located college boathouse on the riverbank just below the college.
