Cranmer Hall, St John’s College,

3 South Bailey, Durham DH1 3RJ

St John’s College library is located in a separate building on the college site, overlooking the peaceful lawns at the back of the college. The library occupies a specially converted chapel, and offers two floors of books and study spaces.

St John’s has one of the most extensive and accessible library collections of any of the Durham colleges. We hold around 30,000 books, and usually add around 1000 to stock every year. The library includes over 40 study spaces, and is a bright and congenial place to work all year round. The library catalogue is fully searchable online, allowing easy access to the details of library stock and your own loan records.

We have 24-hour opening for all college members. There is a self-service system for book issuing and returning. Between 9.00am and 2.00pm on weekdays the college librarian is also on hand to help you, and to answer any questions you may have.

Library Specialism in Theology

Our particular strength is in theology, since the college includes its own taught BA and MA programmes in Theology, Ministry and Mission at Cranmer Hall. Three quarters of the college book holdings are in theology, and we subscribe to over 20 specialist journals in theology and ministry. Many of these are journals which the University Library does not take.
