Author Guidelines

Submissions are encouraged from postgraduate students and post-doctoral scholars (Masters, PhD or equivalent) from the Arts and Humanities and the Natural and Social Sciences, at any institution from the UK or internationally.  Kaleidoscope is intended to represent a diverse range of postgraduate and early-career scholar research activity. As a result, the editors welcome submissions in a variety of formats, including:

  • Full length articles (up to 10,000 words)
  • Short and accessible articles describing recent work in your discipline (up to 1,000 words)
  • Review essays (up to 4,000 words)
  • Book reviews (up to 1,000 words)
  • Interviews with contemporary academics or authors
  • Discussions of contemporary issues relevant to the development of interdisciplinary studies and methodologies

Submissions with an interdisciplinary perspective are encouraged. However we allow discipline-specific papers, provided they are accessible to those from fields other than the author's own. Kaleidoscope is affiliated to Durham University's Institute of Advanced Study. The Institute chooses a new theme for each year to act as a platform and direction for work, and submissions are particularly encouraged relating to this theme.

If you have an idea for a submission and are not sure that it will fit with the journal's theme and format, or if you want to review a recent book pertinent to the theme, please contact the the editors (editor.kaleidoscope@durham.ac.uk) to discuss your intentions.

Please use the following checklist to ensure that your work meets with our editorial requirements before initial submission:

  • Submissions must be accompanied by a short abstract
  • Citation and formatting follows that of the The Chicago Manual of Style (15th Edition)

  6. If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions to ensure a Blind Review have been followed.
