Interdisciplinary Teaching: How universities can prepare students for the real job world by creating and enforcing an interdisciplinary environment

Interdisciplinary. Interdisciplinarity. Collaborative effort. These words have become part of the vernacular within education; primary and secondary schools promoting ‘Interdisciplinary learning’ while higher education institutions offering ‘Interdisciplinary Studies’ as a degree.1 Then there are employers are seeking those who will be ‘

’2. Even though these phrases have been trickling into our collective consciousness for the last few decades and may seem common place, not all universities are employing this approach to teaching. Furthermore, for those attending higher education institutions before the new millennium this form of teaching and learning style were not only rare, if not unavailable, yet companies were expecting employees already familiar and prepared to utilise this knowledge. The concern became by what means someone was to obtain this knowledge and how to create this training environment for students to be able to take with them out into the workforce. This paper was written as a way to offer a real time solution to how we currently are able to help those who have not had the privilege of participating in interdisciplinary learning and teaching methods, nor been given the opportunity within the career environment.
