Durham University Canoe Club

Durham University Canoe Club is one of the most active university canoe clubs in the country, competing in all major disciplines as well as offering a varied and exciting weekly programme for paddlers of all abilities. DUCC has always enjoyed success in the three BUSA Canoeing events - polo, slalom and river racing.

Each year well over a hundred students choose to join the Canoe Club. Some are experienced paddlers in their own fields, while many people have never been in a canoe or kayak before. Activities are flexible so that members can come along whenever it’s convenient, and this helps in creating a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

For novices there are weekly beginner’s sessions in a local swimming pool as well as beginner’s river trips each Wednesday afternoon. At the weekend there are day trips to one of the many rivers in the North East, starting at the beginning of term with easier rivers and becoming more advanced as term progresses. There are also regular trips to the coast to go Surf Kayaking. Each year there is also the opportunity to gain qualifications from beginner’s skills to White Water coach awards.

Each year the club also runs a trip to the French and Austrian Alps, and has also run two successful trips to Canada.
