Welcome to HIVE

HIVE is a research consortium that aims to build a new, and urgently required, evidence base on the effectiveness and suitability of different forms of respiratory protection for general population use during volcanic crises.

WHAT IS HIVE?

What are the objectives of Health Interventions in Volcanic Eruptions?

WHERE WE WORK

The areas where HIVE is performing its studies.

RESEARCH PROJECTS

How and why are we undertaking research in this area.

WHAT IS HIVE?

Volcanic ash inhalation can trigger respiratory disease and cause acute anxiety, leading to increased vulnerability during eruptions. Agencies distribute facemasks which, invariably, have poor facial seals and may inadequately filter fine-grained particles.

In the first study of its kind, we will determine the effectiveness of a range of masks; whether home-made interventions are as effective; and whether mask wearing has a measurable impact on respiratory health.

RESEARCH PROJECTS

Through our research we aim to build a new, and urgently required, evidence base on the effectiveness and suitability of different forms of respiratory protection for general population use during volcanic crises.

There are three approaches to our research:
1. Laboratory experiments
2. Social surveys
3. Clinical trial
