Using Blackboard Collaborate in a webinar

If you are a member of staff or student in the Business School, then you can use Blackboard Collaborate for web conferencing. This page details the basic tools available in the new Collaborate Ultra.

Basic Tools

This table shows the most common tools that you’ll need to use Collaborate

Icon Tool Description
 default avatar Set Avatar  A default grey icon is shown initially. Click on the icon and select My Settings to update your profile picture.
Audio on Audio off Audio Turn your microphone on. If the icon is shown in grey with a line through it, then it is turned off. Select Share Audio to turn it on.
Keyboard shortcut: Alt + M
camera - on camera - off Video Turn your webcam on. If the icon is shown in grey with a line through it, then it is turned off. Select Share Video to turn it on.
Keyboard shortcut: Alt + C
hand-raise-on raise-hand-off Raise your Hand Raise your hand to answer a question or get another moderator’s attention. Select Raise Hand
Keyboard shortcut: Alt + H
 Collaborate Panel Display the Panel Open the Collaborate panel – this displays the chat, list of participants and other tools.
 Close Session Session Menu Opens the Session menu which provides access to a range of other tools
Leave session Exit To exit a Collaborate Session, you should select the option Leave Session from the Session menu (above)
status - present status - away Your Status Show yourself as present or away. Click on the green tick by your avatar image and select Set as Away if you need to pop out. Select I’m back! when you return.
 follow the speaker Layout – Follow the Speaker Switch the screen layout to follow the speaker – whoever is speaking appears at the top of the screen, in a larger video frame.
 grid layout Layout – Grid Switch to the grid view – all videos are the same size
 speaker thumbnail Toggle Focus Change the focus of your screen. If shared content is on your main screen, switch to watching the speaker. If the content is on your main screen, clicking this button will bring up the speaker.

Collaborate Panel Tools

These tools provide access to advanced functions and are all accessed via the purple Collaborate Panel icon at the bottom right of the screen

Icon Tool Description
 Chat Icon Chat Chat with everyone in the session (if the Moderator allows this)
Settings icon Participants View the list of people participating in the session.
Open the Collaborate panel and select Open Participants List
 Participants Icon My Settings Add a profile image, set up your audio, video and notifications.
Open the Collaborate panel and select My Settings
 share content Share Content Panel Moderators and presenters can share a blank whiteboard, an application, a PDF, a Powerpoint presentation, or an image file (GIF, JPEG and PNG formats)
 whiteboard Share Whiteboard Moderators and presenters can use this button to share a blank whiteboard, accessed from the Share Content panel
 share screen Share Application Moderators and presenters can use this button to share their entire desktop or just one programme/application they have running, accessed from the Share Content panel
 share files Share Files Moderators and presenters can use this button to share PDFs, Powerpoint presentations and images (GIF, JPEG and PNG formats), accessed from the Share Content panel
 polling Access Poll Moderators and presenters can use this button to deploy a poll. Note when a poll is live, a similar icon appears at the foot of the screen, allowing you to show or hide it to other people – handy if you want to refer back to it later.
 Settings icon Options Open the participants options menu
Collaborate panel control Close Close the Session menu – note this doesn’t end your Collaborate session.

Session Menu Tools

These links are all accessed via the Session button at the top left of the screen.

Icon Tool Description
 Record Session Record a Session Moderators can use this button to turn on session recording – participants will be notified of this!
 Report an Issue Report an issue  Use this button to report a problem to Blackboard (not the IT Service Desk).
 Collaborate Help Help Go to Blackboard’s online help site – help.blackboard .com
 Learn more about new UI Interface Tour Open the new interface tour – helpful if you are migrating from the old java version.
Leave session Exit Exit the Collaborate Session, you will be presented with an optional survey to tell Blackboard about the quality of your experience.
Close button Close Close the Session menu – note this doesn’t end your Collaborate session.
