DURHAM UNIVERSITY MOUNTAINEERING CLUB

Hello All,

Here is some information about DUMC and what we do.

What is DUMC?

DUMC aims to provide a great social atmosphere in which you can meet other climbers and learn to climb, all the while having a good time. First-time climbers are welcome!!! Even if you have never climbed before, you will meet plenty of friendly and experienced climbers who can help you learn, and the club will provide any gear you need.

How does the club run?

-The DUMC organises weekly trips  or ‘meets’, either to outdoor locations such as Northumbria, the Peak District, the Lake District, or to local indoor climbing centres in Durham, Newcastle and Sunderland.

-On top of this the DUMC holds several longer trips during the year. These usually run in places a little further afield such as the Cairngorms in Scotland or Snowdonia, North Wales. In the colder months the DUMC holds several winter mountaineering-based trips in Scotland for those who want to climb over snow and ice!

-We also hold some cracking socials, usually with some climbing-related theme (such as the traditional Roped-Up social or the proposed Gear 'n' Beer' night)

DUMC exists for everyone in the University who enjoys any aspect of mountaineering. Whether you're into bouldering in the Peak District or the Scottish winter, whatever your level of ability and experience, DUMC aims to help.

  • Use of club gear at meets, but also available to borrow at any time.
  • Access to the 48 bouldering wall at Hild-Bede College

You can join the club at any time through the year but you do need to be a member to come on any club trip. The easiest way to join is to come and find our stall at the freshers fair at the DSU, or in Elvet Riverside with the Team Durham Sports, or at Queens Campus, or come along to the introductory slide-show in Oct. If you've missed us at one of these, come along to any club trip or social with 30 pretty British pounds to trade for a membership card.

Want to join the DUMC part way through the year??

It's never too late to join the DUMC. If you are interested in joining part way through the year it costs £25 to join at the start of Epiphany term and £20 to join at the beginning of the summer term. Drop the club an email if you are interested!

We organise day trips nearly every weekend during term time to a variety of locations, depending on the season, with the occasional weekend, or longer, away. On Wednesday afternoons and Monday evenings (around 7pm) members can also usually be found training at the Durham Climbing Centre. You can check out our next meet in the calendar section.
