On Friday 13 September 2013 the University honoured the outstanding achievements of women and men whose thoughtful scholarship and outstanding integrity has changed both our world, and the way we understand our place in it.

17 prominent scholars and intellectuals were recognised including: Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, classicist Professor Mary Beard, inventor of the world wide web Professor Sir Tim Berners-Lee, anthropologist Professor Dame Marilyn Strathern, and the philosopher and Professor Nancy Cartwright.

Nancy Cartwright, considered one of the most important and influential contemporary philosophers of science, will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Southern Methodist University (SMU) during the university’s commencement ceremony May 12, 2012.
