Belsay Hall and Castle

  

Belsay Hall (English Heritage) is a slightly strange building, with its Classical pillars and empty rooms.

  

(L) Gardens of Belsay Hall and (R) the original castle, abandoned as a residence when the Hall was built.

Parkhead on the former Stanhope and Tyne Railway. The hilly nature of the route meant that much of it was worked by rope inclines and horse traction rather than locomotives.
