Who is John Snow?

John Snow. Our namesake.

No, not this one…

Or this one…

We are named after Dr. John Snow, an English physician who is considered one of the ‘fathers of modern epidemiology.’

Born and raised in York, Dr. John Snow became one of the foremost names in epidemiology through his study of spread of disease. Perhaps his most famous act was identifying the spread of cholera through Soho and attributing it to an infected water supply, to which legend has it, he famously removed the handle. Despite being what may have been considered an act of vandalism in those days, the spread of cholera stopped and countless lives were saved. At John Snow College it has now become somewhat of a tradition to have a water fight on our annual college day in honour of his life saving act.
