Stephenson College was founded in 2001 and is one of the newest colleges at Durham University. The college is based at the Queen’s Campus site in Stockton-on-Tees, along with John Snow College, and has over 1000 students including undergraduates and postgraduates.
We are named after George Stephenson, the 19th century railway pioneer who played a key role in the development of the first railway locomotive and its first journey on the Stockton and Darlington line in 1825. The father of the steam engine, George Stephenson is a recurrent theme around the college ground. Locomotion #1 is a replica of the very first railway locomotive and can be found on the right as you turn into college.
