First (quantitative paper) calculations and measurements showing how resistive grain boundaries must be to limit Jc in Bi- HTS polycrystalline superconductors. Here we show: Bi-2212 has low grain boundary resistivity and hence potential for high Jc if grain and grain-boundary pinning is added; Bi2223 must be aligned to increase Jc.

First (quantitative paper) calculations and measurements showing how resistive grain boundaries must be to limit Jc in polycrystalline superconductors. We show: Jc values in state-of-the-art technological high-field superconductors are only 1 % of theoretical limit; Large increases in Jc may be achieved in Nb3Sn, by completely removing the grain boundaries from these materials.
