Embedding Scholarship through Academic Staff Development

The embedment of teaching and learning development into HR is only 18 months old but already the benefits are tangible. For example, ensuring consistency of engagement of all academic staff with the HEA accredited CREATE (Cultivating Research and Teaching Excellence) CPD scheme and ensuring rigour at progression and promotions panels to delivering new opportunities for staff to work towards and build their own SoTL language.
This is a new ‘place’ for me as an academic developer to work and in this short talk I will outline the opportunities this positioning of the academic developer role in HR is to embedding and actioning SoTL. SoTL was not an explicitly used term at Bristol and will describe how it is being useful in opening up discussions across academic staff as well as professional services colleagues in HR around rewarding and recognising educational excellence at Bristol. I openly admit that the commitment of the ASD team and other HR colleagues and the senior team at Bristol to developing and recognising educational excellence has opened a lot of doors for embedding SoTL into the institution and personally view the model of working relations are Bristol as whole heatedly positive for all.
