Grow up, Hansel & Gretel : Embedding scholarship in Foundation level assessment without really trying

This presentation will show how fairy tales can be used as the starting point to develop research skills for Foundation students progressing to Primary Education. The presentation will include a discussion of innovative assessment and prompts to independent learning. This involves the students producing their own annotated bibliography and commentary on their independent research as part of a summative oral presentation, giving excellent insight into why and how students learn and what they feel about this learning. The presentation will also take a particular fairy tale and explore ways in which this can be researched. Different theories will be used to view the genre, as well as how fairy tales have been mined by film makers, gamers and writers and explains why fairy tales are still relevant today.
