Crucial Guide

What do you do?

We aim to be an inclusive society and to offer an easy avenue into the wonders of hill walking and mountaineering. However, it's important that you know what you're signing up for before you come!

What do I need to bring?

Please look at our kit list here. You may not be allowed if you do not bring the appropriate kit!

Is this the right society for me?

If you want to get out of Durham and explore some fantastic wild and remote locations with spectacular scenery in the company of like-minded people, then we may well be the right society for you.

We usually split up into several routes on each walk, each aimed at different abilities. This means that there will be faster and slower, longer and shorter, higher and lower groups. Our typical distances vary from 16km to 25km, but it's important to consider weather conditions and terrain and, most importantly, height gain. We will typically climb between 600m and 2000m in a day, and it is important that you do not underestimate this figure when signing up for a walk!

We aim to go off the beaten track on all our walks. This means that you might have to jump the occasional river, climb up loose scree slopes or bash through heather - if you do not enjoy this, make sure you sign up for one of our less wild destinations.

If you've done DofE or Ten Tors, you're probably well prepared! You just don't need to carry a big rucksack on our trips!

Our destinations

Please click on the destinations for more information. We tend to label the difficulty of the locations as follows, but bear in mind that 'difficult' means different things to different people!

Do I have to come every week?

No! We have a group of regulars who you'll see almost every week, but others come just once or twice a year. Everyone with an adventurous spirit is more than welcome!
