This resource is the result of a collaboration between Archives and Special Collections, Durham University Library, Durham County Record Office and Stephen Roe of Parkside School, Willington. The impetus for the project came from the Teacher Professional Development Programme which has been run since 1997 by NEMLAC in conjunction with the region's Training Enterprise Councils (TECs) and Education Business Partnerships (EBPs). This Programme allows representatives from museums, libraries and archives and members of the teaching profession to experience each other's work and to develop means of delivering the National Curriculum in innovative, exciting and stimulating ways.

The aim of this particular project was to develop a resource which could be used for the study of 'Population and Urbanisation' at Key Stage 4. A decision was made to focus on Crook, which forms part of the catchment area of Parkside School, but it was hoped that the resource would also act as an exemplar for teachers and students wanting to carry out a similar investigation in their own locality.

The investigation takes three key sources - census data, maps and information from trade directories - and shows how they can be used to study the development of a particular locality. Information on using the source is included, as is general background information on the history of Crook, working conditions, living conditions, health and sanitation and migration.

The partners would like to thank their individual institutions for allowing them to participate in this project, NEMLAC for providing funding and offering their usual assistance and Durham Education Business Partnership for their administration of the scheme.
