St. John’s College – Sir William Leech Library

The Sir William Leech Library in St. John’s College occupies the first and second floors of our purpose-built Learning Resource Centre, which is situated next to the college chapel.

The building is open 24/7 to library members and access is normally by campus card. There are CCTV cameras and a book security system in operation.

The library is light, spacious and congenial for study, with 86 study desks as well as a group study room for up to 8 people and an excellent stock of around 27,000 books, which includes a particularly fine theology collection. About 1,000 books on a wide range of subjects are added to stock each year.

The library catalogue is fully searchable online at: http://library.dur.ac.uk

and the librarian can be contacted by email at: johns.library@durham.ac.uk

One student has already commented on “how good it is to have such an excellent resource at John’s.”

 While another has written:

“Just a note to say how fantastically easy the books were to find, and the check-out process was very straightforward. I had a browse and appreciate the depth of the collections on the subjects I am interested in.”

Library Specialism in Theology

Our particular strength is in theology, since the college includes its own taught BA and MA programmes in Theology, Ministry and Mission at Cranmer Hall. Some 75% of the library books are in the subject and we subscribe to a number of specialist journals in theology and ministry.
