Postgraduate Ordinand Pathway

MA in Theology and Ministry (2 or 3 years)

This pathway is for Anglican ordinands who have previously completed a BA in Theology or Religious Studies or a related subject with a 2:1 or above. Ordinands with postgraduate experience in other disciplines and some theological study may also apply for this pathway, with such applications decided on a case-by-case basis.

The academic programme is the MA in Theology and Ministry (MATM), validated by Durham University and delivered by Cranmer Hall. This offers a Practical Theological approach in its core module, and a commitment across all modules to integrate theology and ministry.

Ordinands join a rich learning cohort on the MATM, including those in training for ministry in other churches, those already in ministry, professionals, and those heading towards further research. In addition, ordinands are normally required to take modules from Durham University’s world-class Department of Theology & Religion.

The programme can be taken in a residential or mixed-mode capacity, and over 2 or 3 years, depending on the training needs of the ordinand and in conversation with both ordinand and sponsoring diocese.

Whilst studying the MATM, ordinands take formational modules throughout the three years from the BA in Theology, Ministry, and Mission programme taught in Cranmer Hall. They participate fully in placements, and mission study blocks and are fully integrated into community life at Cranmer.

This pathway offers an unparalleled opportunity to study theology at a high level whilst integrating the concerns and challenges of ministry in a rigorous manner, in particular in the 15,000-word dissertation which offers opportunity to undertake a significant independent research project.

Further details of the MATM can be found under the postgraduate study section of the website.
