Glossary - positivism

The philosophical paradigm that underlies what is usually termed the 'scientific method'. It assumes that the 'world' (we are investigating) is ordered and regular, rather than random, and that we can investigate this in an objective manner. It therefore forms the basis for hypothesis-driven research. For a fuller discussion, see (Oates 2006).
