The History of the Irish Draught Horse

This website is not the best place for me to write out in full my own particular contribution to the history of the Irish Draught horse. However, I will be using it as a place where I can test my own ideas and revise my thoughts, so that anyone who is interested, can have access to those thoughts and tell me where and how I am wrong (before I write my book). Many of my own views on the ID are of course un-orthodox. Thus, with regard to the orthodox history I am not going to dispute it all here. I would rather you read the books yourself and then read what I have to say afterwards and make up your own mind. If you want something quick and online about the Irish Draught and don't really care too much about the details being precise, accurate or correct even, then look up the ID on Wikipedia.

There are some great books out there which present the orthodox view on the ID, and whilst I do not agree with everything written in them, this is not to detract from my wider respect for their general scholarship. You could do no better than to read (in no particular order): THE IRISH DRAUGHT HORSE: A HISTORY by Mary McGrath and Joan C. Griffith (The Collins Press; New Ed edition 2006). ISBN-13: 978-1905172290 and THE IRISH DRAUGHT HORSE by Alex Fell (J.A. Allen & Co Ltd ; 1991). ISBN: 0-85131-504-6. And if you really want some detail then follow the link to this great ID resource page...
