A set of pictures from a short weekend visit to Paris during my Lyon stay.
View from the hill of Montmatre at night [48 53 7 N, 2 20 26 E].
Basilica of the Sacré Coeur [48 53 9 N, 2 30 36 E], Montmartre. The similarity of style and prominent location with the Notre-Dame Basilica in Lyon is not a coincidence; both were built at the end of the 19th C as symbols of a Church triumphant over revolutionary socialist movements.
“Lovers’ locks” on the passarelle Solférino.
The Musée d’Orsay is a magnificent collection of mostly later 19th C French art housed in the former Gare d’Orsay.
Meissonier‘s famous picture of Napoleon, “Campagne de France“.
Van Gogh’s “Maison à Cordeville”. The angle shows the thickness of the paint strokes.
A nice example of the Impressionists. Unfortunately I can’t now remember the artist!
The museum also has an interesting small collection of furniture from the period.
For a hotel in the centre of Paris, the Hôtel Saint-Louis Bastille offered excellent quality for quite a reasonable rate. Very convenient for the Gare de Lyon.
