Herrington Country Park / Penshaw Monument
The rather grandly titled Herrington Country Park is redeveloped land on the site of a former open cast coal mine. Sadly the cafe is lamentable – there’s a much better one across the road next to the Penshaw Monument.
View from walkway at the top of the Penshaw Monument, which has recently been re-opened to visitors (it had been closed since a fatal accident in 1926). The wind at the top was ferocious!
