A short set of pictures from October.

Manchester

Replica of the Small-Scale Experimental Machine at the Museum of Science and Industry. Built to test fundamental ideas in computing, and completed in mid 1948, the SSEM was the world’s first stored-program computer.

Staircase at the Britannia Hotel. Booked at the last minute (on the way to Manchester!), the Britannia was the epitome of faded grandeur with its magnificent staircase and dated rooms. Unfortunately we had picked a weekend when the Conservative party were holding their annual conference in Manchester, and the night was disturbed by so-called “rave against austerity” by protesters in nearby Piccadilly Gardens. Sigh…

Penistone Country Park near Haworth.

Following a devastating fire in 1998, the restoration of St. Brandon’s church, Brancepeth, was completed in 2014. The result is magnificent.
