The picturesque Butterby Oxbow is far enough away from any car parks to be deserted.


A walk from Allensford east along the northern bank of the Derwent at the end of May.

Hidden away in the trees of the north bank are the remains of a late 17th C blast furnace. This area, and nearby Shotley Bridge, in particular, was an early centre of steel making.

On a July walk from Wolsingham in Weardale. The open gate on the right is oddly perched on the connecting fence!

An unexpected holy well in Wolsingham, dedicated to Godric and his fellow hermit Aelric.

Originally intended as pea shoots, these pea plants positively marched up the trellis!
