First of two sets of pictures from a holiday in mid-September based near Caldbeck, at the northern edge of the Lake District.
Old AA sign at the petrol pump outside the village store. I like the precision of the distance to London!
St. John’s in the Vale walk: Starting at Legburthwaite car park, climbing the ridge of High Rigg, initially with views south towards Thirlmere (top left) then north-east towards Blencathra (top right) before descending to St. John’s church (bottom right) and returning along the bridleway above the intake boundary, with a welcome tea and cake break at Low Bridge End Farm.
Souther Fell walk: The walk largely follows the very Scottish-sounding River Glenderamackin, whose name is indeed assumed to be Celtic meaning “valley of the pig”. The walk started in the village of Mungrisdale, which means the same thing, but in Norse! (Left) Crossing the river before beginning the climb up Souther Fell (522 m). (Right) St. Kentigern‘s church, Mungrisdale. Curiously the same saint is more commonly known at St. Mungo in Scotland.
