Dodd: (L) View NE from the summit of Dodd (502 m) towards the Skiddaw range. The peak on the left is probably Carl Side (746 m) with Skiddaw Little Man (865 m) in the distance. (M) South towards Derwentwater and (NW) Bassenthwaite. Recent flooding saw these two lakes merging!
High Pike: High Pike (658 m) is the nearest fell to Caldbeck, and so we walked directly from the holiday cottage. (L) Cows on the gentle approach. (R) View from the top towards Carrock Fell (661 m). Just visible are some gullies associated with the extensive mining of the Caldbeck fells.
Visit to Brougham Castle (English Heritage) on the return journey, not to be confused with the nearby Brough Castle! Both castles were owned by the Clifford family, and were both rescued from decay by the energetic Lady Anne Clifford, who died at Brougham in 1676. Sadly her heirs didn’t share her passion for maintaining old and draughty castles. The graffiti (R) dates from a period when the castle was in a serious state of disrepair, and climbing into the towers would have been an adventure!
