Academic background
Damian S. Vilchis-Rodriguez graduated from the Universidad Autonoma del Estado de Morelos in 1992. He obtained his PhD degree from the University of Glasgow in 2010 in the area of Power Systems. His research interests include the dynamic simulation of power systems, electric machine modelling for fast transients simulation, long term dynamics assessment and condition monitoring.

Research topic
Condition-monitoring of electrical generators and associated power electronics for offshore wind turbines

Reserch background and objectives
Damian’s research focuses on the development of mathematical models of wind generators undergoing electrical and mechanical faults and their experimental validation, for the detection and diagnosis of the faults directly from the power or current spectrum produced by the turbine generator. The work will cover the new permanent-magnet generator technologies being proposed for large offshore wind turbines and extend into the development of suitable practical condition-monitoring systems. The work will also link to and integrate research on the fault diagnosis, reliability analysis and monitoring of the power electronic converters that act as the interface between the turbine generator and the grid connection.
