Siyu Gao took part in the corporation programme between North China Electric Power University (NCEPU) and The University of Manchester (B.Eng) before pursuing PhD in University of Manchester.

Research topic

Working description
Offshore wind energy forms a major part of the UK Government's strategy for reducing CO2 emissions and combating climate change. One of the difficulties of offshore wind is to transmit electrical energy from long distance underwater. Traditional AC transmission is limited to about 60 km offshore because of the losses caused by the capacitive charging. Longer distance requires HVDC transmission which is relatively inexperienced for offshore wind power. The research aims to develop reliable and robust methods for VSC based HVDC transmission for offshore wind.
