Ting Lei took part in the corporation programme between North China Electric Power University (NCEPU) and The University of Manchester (B.eng) before pursuing PhD in University of Manchester.

Research topic
Wind farm system reliability

Research background and objectives
Offshore wind energy forms a major part of the UK Government's strategy for reducing CO2 emissions and combating climate change. The cost of individual foundations offshore is driving designers towards ever-larger machines for this market with consequently uncertain reliability levels. A key issue is ensuring that system design is such that wind farms and ancillary systems can operate for extended periods of time without a need for maintenance. The research would be looking at the design of the wind turbine system power electronics for better reliability and lower maintenance costs.
Ting Lei would focus on investigating wind farm system reliability and condition monitoring focusing principally on the wind farm electrical system and power electronics. The research would largely be system simulation with some hardware validation.
